OVERVIEW

Indulgence

Stupid [mistakes.]
Stupid [consequences.]
aether imbalance is a slow, fitting death sentence.
a fucking ticking time bomb.

Enya is nothing short of a problem -- something he is keenly aware of. If there is a wrong decision to be made, he's probably already made it. he is however loyal, and despite his stand-off-ish personality, can warm to others enough to consider them friends.

HOOKS & THEMES

Bad Habits
If the answer is to be found at the bottom of a bottle - or perhaps, ten - Enya's like to try to do so. Whilst his tolerance for alcohol is high; he'll nonetheless often be found in bars, taverns, clubs.
Testing Limits
Enya's need to push his own limits finds him more often than not participating in less-than-legal fighting arenas. There's gil to be gained, and opponents twice his size - often with ferocious strength to boot. Testing the limit of his Summoning against such opponents is nothing short of an addiction; and he'll be right in the ring to do it.
On The Hunt
Hunt marks mean gil - and often a considerable challenge to boot. When there's nothing better to do, Enya will pick up hunt marks and pursue them. Not out of any good-nature, save-the-world feeling -- no, he just wants the coin.
Aether Imbalance
Enya's experimental summoning comes with side effects, primarily, that his aether leans more towards wind-aspect, than in balance with the other elements. This may be visible by those who have an affinity for aether.
THEMES
Substance abuse of somnus.
acohol/gore/fighting/etc
mature/dark themes in general
The summoning traits I use for Enya are a hybrid of IX/XI and XIV, though I have no interest in making him OP.

BACKGROUND

An accomplished Summoner, who has perhaps fled his past one too many steps - for it creeps on him in the dead of night; and nostalgia, the sweet temptation that it is, is so easily sourced through alternative means.Enya’s present state is conflicted. His summoning has reached the heights he’d intended; and yet - to do so is at the cost of his own aether balance. Shifted towards wind-aspected element, it is out of line from the others. It is on the precipice of tipping too far; of which, records show, that is not something one can so easily come back from.Primarily residing in Ishgard, Enya’s ideal life is one of simply nothing - research, peace, quiet. And yet, it is anything but. Rune’s son appearing on his doorstep hadn’t been anticipated; nor had finding bonds with others - friends.Underground fights, hunt marks, travelling – all these things are meager means to forestall the inevitable encroachment of his past on his mind. Distractions that aid a neverending retreat from shadows he’s not quite like to hold off for longer. Somnus does little to take the edge off of reality, either, try as he might. For that, at its core, is the theme of Enya Elvindr:Distraction.

The PastChildhood memories are perhaps those which are sweetest; honeyed on the lips and steeped in nostalgia. On the borders of Skatay Range; where luscious greens meet bitter snow, he was raised, in a traditional environment, following the steps of his ancestors. Closed off from the outside world, his clan lived a simple and careful existence: owing their protection to the spirits of the forest, that shrouded them from distant dangers. Yet these years are fleeting a sweet; for it is by ritual that he entered The Trials, at the age of sixteen, to determine as to whether he’d continue his expected path as Warder.Wood Warders in this clan are survivors of these trials. Where the very forest itself turns against you; plucks friends from your side, and muffles the final gasps of those daring enough to step foot in them. It is an experience that even decades onwards, Enya will not elaborate on. Only that he survived, and in doing so - vowed not to later ask the fate of his children, who also walked that very same experience.Survive, he did though. And the years that followed saw an apprentice Wood Warder become a man in his own right; excelling in curative aether as a healer, and dual chained blades, as a fighter. For years he stayed the path, true to his village, and yet it is in solitude, on the eve of war, that he stumbled.Association with other tribes was forbidden at that point; even for trade. And yet by some cruel twist of fate, it is a fallen Veena that Enya comes across in the wild - struggling for life, in the aftermath of an unknown foe. Another Warder; and yet, by clothing alone - far too thick and warm for the woods - clearly one that had strayed.Perhaps against better judgement, he chose to aid the stranger. Hindsight is perhaps cruel - for would he have made the same decision, knowing the ultimate path doing so had set him on?He’d come to know this stranger as Rune, who had strayed from his village in pursuit of an unusual enemy; new to these lands. In doing so he’d faced a wound not quite like any other - metal embedded in skin, difficult to both remove, and patch. As soon as recovery was clear, the two parted ways; but didn’t quite forget their meeting. In the year that followed, they would often do that – meet. Against wishes of both their villages, they’d wander into each other, talk, and as time went on – Rune’s friendship shifted to more than just that, to affection, to love. Now they were breaking two rules; for such relationships and actions are reserved for one purpose only: the further growth of their respective villages. It was a relationship that Enya did admit to his partner, Aya. One that he needed; for despite his close bond with her, it wasn’t love - it was obligation. Yet a mutual acceptance regardless; for she had no interest in anything more, she had her duty, as did he. And so, those rare nights, sometimes two would be three; a secret shared between them all.
War, however, cares not for love stories.
The Garlean’s invasion of Dalmasca saw to that; an increase of patrols and conflict, which inevitably spilled over into their lands - regardless of how far from the city they dwelled.Enya will not recount the night he lost everything. The night he buried dozens, and yet wept only for one. The night he turned his back on his village; and silently allowed himself to be branded a traitor of his duty. What Follows
What use are curative magics, if they do not stem the flow of blood from one so fragile? As soon as he steps foot in Eorzea, he casts aside the class, and vows not to devote himself to saving lives in such a way again.
Years are spent instead studying the school of Summoning; and the addition of a Carbuncle by his side is not without its merits - Someone to talk to, something to hold in the cold of night; a companion, as small and energetic as the young creature is at the time. When word comes of the emergence of the Primal, Garuda, the Summoner’s interest is only peaked - and he willingly signs on to face such a threat; in one of those unfortunate, earlier expeditions. It is a cruel miracle he survived even that – and yet, with survival, an understanding of the aether she manipulates. How it shifts and slices; turning the very air against him into a sharpened and cruel weapon. From there he reads; he learns, and for those who come after, he asks simply that they take observations; materia; notes - anything he can use to further a growing obsession with this being.Eventually, the Warrior of Light succeeded in her demise. He took note of that too.Turns out, the Arcanist Guild isn’t ever so keen on someone choosing to explore alternative means of summoning. There’s probably a reason he doesn’t step foot in Limsa Lominsa very often, now.
On his own, he continues to develop his summoning - with the goal of surpassing his own limits.

WIDER WORLD - ALTERNATIVE CHARACTERS
